» written by hinatasou [Discuss]

Synopsis
Spread your wings and fly! Welcome to the world of Storm Riders, where motor-powered inline skates called ‘Air Trecks’ take extreme sports to a whole new level. Those who dare to ride with these high tech devices risk life and limb in a struggle for fame, power and wings to take to the sky. Enter Ikki Minami, the toughest fighter on the east side of town. He rules his school, takes on violent gangs single-handedly and lives with the Noyamanos: four sexy sisters with a surprising secret. And after a humiliating defeat by a terrifying gang of Storm Riders, the sisters welcome him to the world of Air Trecks, where his strength, speed and ambitions soar to brand new heights. Now, with powerful new sings, he must protect his friends, his school and his pride in fierce Air Treck battles known as ‘Parts Wars.’ One mistake could cost him everything, but each victory brings him one step closer to becoming the king of the sky.

Review
Air Gear is a 25-episode anime series based off the manga by the artist Oh! great (Ogure Ito), the mastermind behind Tenjho Tenge. Air of course is what we breathe. It is what surrounds us and enables us to live. Gear is mechanical and refers to the powered inline skates.

» The Pros
My favorite line from the series is from Sora in episode 14: 'If a man is striped of his dreams, then how can he live on? What's the point in living?'

» The Cons
Ikki's wins are miraculous. MJ-Battle, official artist of Animesou, pointed out that he can't win without the support of his friends.

» Animation
9.0
Character design is excellent. Ikki is stubborn and is associated with crows. The beautiful pink haired Simca is a swallow. You have your African American representative the gigantic Buccha who is symbolized by a tank. Kazu is the speedy beanie boy represented by a stealth jet fighter. Onigiri which means rice ball in Japanese is a hentai. Akito who is fierce as a shark satisfies the yaoi interest with the switch of his eye patch. His guardian Kaito looks like Remy from Street Fighter Third Strike. In addition there's a female Tuxedo Mask (Sailor Moon) archetype. Something is certainly wrong with their schoolteacher Ton-chan. Nue has some badass black armor.

» Sound
9.8
The undeniable strength of the Air Gear series is its music. My two favorite background themes are the techno Love Sensation and the soothing Overkooled. Buccha and Akito also have their own theme songs, Dawn Of Da Bassment and Snapped respectively. Its hilarious to see Ikki ogling over the females in the sexy theme Some-Body-Funk (Yeah! Body!). The OP song is called Chain by the group Back-on. There are remixes of the theme spread throughout the series which are unfortunately not available on the OST. The EN song called Sky-2-High by skankfunk is either love it or hate it. Also I find it a bit ironic to find both Yugioh characters together: Yuki Judai (Kenichirou Ohashi, or just Kenn) from Yugioh GX as Kazu and Seto Kaiba (Kenjiro Tsuda) as the red haired Spitfire.

» Story
8.0
There is a linear progression of story arcs from Ikki first getting his ATs and fighting the Skull Saders, meeting Buccha the Yaou and Akito, challenging Behemoth, and last a trip to Japan's former capital Kyoto. I despised episode 16, versus the fat female wrestler. It was blatant fanservice to the point that it made me sick. In some respects, Air Gear reminds me of Pokemon. In the same way that Ash has to travel the region defeating the 8 gym leaders earning badges, Ikki has to climb the symbolic Trophaeum Tower and challenge 8 kings who hold sacred ATs called Regalias. There are instances when Ikki goes off in philosophical thought. The ending leaves room for a second season.

» Recommend
7.5
Air Gear is not rated G for everyone. I'd give it a PG-13 for nudity, slang, and animated violence. Private parts both male and female are covered by Ikki's crow. In episode 9, you see Ikki taking a reeking crap. Akito has a habit of saying the F word. It definitely won't be aired on US shores intact.
