Synopsis
Densuke Mifune, a junior high student at Zashono Academy, just happens to find himself at the wrong place at the wrong time. Near the end of the semester, he was caught peeping into the school infirmary where by chance the girls were all in their underwear. Among them was Chiharu Shinonome. Because Densuke blew his allowance on Dead or Alive summer time special edition, he enters a schoolwide competition. With the prize money, he can reconcile with Shinonome by buying her a birthday present. The whole Eiken Club members stand by his side lending their support.
Review
Eiken (pronounced Ehh-ken) is a 2 episode OVA series, more like one whole story subdivided into two parts. Some websites might classify Eiken as a hentai. It is rather a hentai parody since there is no explicit sex scene. Still, the E in Eiken is definitely for Ecchi! But as Strongbad once said in one of his e-mails, ‘Too much of a good thing is an awesome thing. And too much of an awesome thing is…umm…a really bad thing.’ Eiken tends to go overboard on the big-breasted females. It is so unnatural.

The Breakdown
Beware of the banana peel!
» The Pros
When Densuke was starting to lose confidence, Grace tells him to believe in himself. Her fortune telling exists to make Densuke realize what is most important to him. Look up and open the future yourself.

» The Cons
There are two imaginary bondage scenes of Chiharu tied in measuring tape. In the Ending sequence you can see Kirika's ass crack. There are panty shots o' plenty. The water slide is filled instead with white yogurt. When it spills onto the bodies of the girls, it looks like semen. In the four-person obstacle relay race, Grace has to suck on a large chocolate covered banana (you know what it represents). The green haired teacher gets eels swimming up her bottom (tentacle rape if this was a hentai).

The Opening animation shows Densuke running away from something, but he can only find breasts. He eventually reaches Shinonome, his pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. He then gets caught up in hula hooping, an excuse to show bouncing breasts. The Ending is simple, a zooming out from Kirika with snow falling. The artwork of Kirika in the Ending is different from the anime. Perhaps it's from the manga. The animation of the OVA is vibrant. There are a few slow motion fall scenes. |

The lyrics to both the Opening song Feel Like Our Days and Ending song JEWEL'S memory by Toko are heartwarming. Interestingly, the same voice actor as Cloud in Final Fantasy Advent Children, Takahiro Sakurai, plays the villain Shima Kurosawa. Chiharu Shinonome's voice is soft spoken and shy. |

» Story

Eiken does a great job introducing all the characters right from the beginning. Grace is a fortuneteller, Kirika is the scheming leader, Kyoko is the young technology expert, Komoe is the clumsy chief, the green haired woman with the glasses is the Eiken Club academic advisor, and Yuriko is the athletic Rival Schools physical fitness honor student. There seems to be a time gap after the first few minutes into Episode 1 when Densuke first joined the Eiken Club. After the Opening, Densuke is acquainted with all the members and a full semester has already passed. Summer is right around the corner. The story might have been better if there were more than 2 episodes. Then again, who in their right mind would be able to stand watching more bustful episodes of Eiken. And why does everyone have a thing for Densuke in the first place? He's the innocent, passive, submissive type. |

I would not allow my little cousins to watch Eiken. I also would not advise showing it to someone who is just getting started on their anime journey. It is cheap though, only retailing at $19.95. |
