Synopsis
The story of Romeo and Juliet is well known, a man and woman who fell in love from a time distant. But in those days their love was forbidden. Fate was against them as both ended their lives in suicide. Yuusuke and Midori, a similar couple, promised that they would be reborn again, reunite with each other, get married, and live happily ever after. Can one’s destiny truly be changed?
Review
Green Green (or Guri Guri for short) is based off of the first out of the total three PC dating simulation H-games developed by Groover and released in October 2001. The high school Kanenone translates to Sound of Bell. Yuusuke is able to date the five girls: Midori, Chigusa-sensei, Futaba, Wakaba, and Sanae. Why did the developers decide to name the game/series Green Green in the first place? The main heroine Midori means green in Japanese and she does have green eyes. The girl’s school uniforms feature a green skirt and tie. The color green is associated with nature, leaves, scenery, and lushness. In english, green also describes youth, immaturity, and inexperience. These themes are apparent as the boys attempt to cast off their bonds and become adults during this monthly encounter with the girls.
The CORRECT Japanese website can be found at http://www.ponycanyon.co.jp/greengreen/ (ANN never got around to updating the page location). There you’ll find episode summaries coupled with screenshots, character profiles, cast list, DVD and CD covers, and other links.
The Breakdown
Just for fun, the real life Kanenone girls!
» The Pros
They are called Japan's most idiotic guys for a reason. Ichibanboshi, Bachiiguu, and Tenjin steal all the scenes away from Yuusuke and Midori and define the series for what it is - ecchi. Boys will be boys. It has been said that the average man forms a thought about sex approximately every two minutes, ponders it over for about a minute, and after 50 seconds lets it go. From nipple prints, female dressup gowns, Bachiiguu's banana breakfast sampler, Ichibanboshi's ostrich uniform and Futaba love ballad, Tenjin's rice and onii-chama fetish, to their various camouflage outfits, the trio is simply hilarious to watch.

» The Cons
Yes Green Green is a school anime but not quite to the extent of To Heart. In only one episode are the students actually cramming for their exams. Of course their incentive is that if you passed above average, you can have a good time all you want with any guy or girl. Green Green highlights all the extracurricular activities of high school life - welcoming party, swimming, dormitories equipped with hot springs, and the frightful ghost walk to the shrine, all the things that make school enjoyable. Oh yes, what is up with the monkeys and bears?

In the OP scenes it shows each of the characters naked, then with a mouse over clothes are put on. The opening of each episode begins with a silhouette like Revolutionary Girl Utena. Be forewarned that you see almost full on nudity notably the female breasts. There are plenty of panty shots. Animation is fluid and rich. |

All the voice talents play their roles to part. I was surprised to discover that half of them did not have starring roles in other anime series. Nakayama Sara, the voice of Midori, is more famous for her role as Riku in DNAngel. In addition, she was Senjou Kuyou, the green haired girl in Yumeria. Suzuki Mariko (Chigusa-sensei) was also in Yumeria as Nate. Her more important role is KOS-MOS in Xenosaga The Animation. You should remember Kisaichi Atsushi (Yuusuke) from Kanon (Yuuichi). The OP song Guri Guri is upbeat and captures the excitement of the series. |

As the episodes progress, we see a number of personality and attitude changes. Sanae abandons her shy self and is more talkative at least with Wakaba, as she gets healthier. Futaba softens up and is not as violent as first illustrated. Reika-chan, who was opposed to Yuusuke and Midori's relationship, in the end supports Midori. The ending is moving. Yuusuke has to choose between his friends and Midori. Yuusuke was not his usual self when he refused to help his friends set up for the Bon Odori festival. Frankly, I think he is stupid for not having the courage that Midori exhibited throughout the entire series to change fate. Whatever happened to his resolve to never let her go? Not your typical romance anime ending. |
