Synopsis
WARNING!!! THE SUBJECT MATTER OF THIS REVIEW IS NOT SUITABLE FOR PEOPLE UNDER THE AGE OF 18. FOR MATURE AUDIENCES ONLY!!! Claude is a scholar aspiring to traveling the world as a great merchant. Sofie Delmotte beckons him to return to Ebenbourg, where his late father dwelled until his death. She explains to his amazement that Claude is to be the new Lord of Ronsard, a town in the Grand Duchy of Ebenbourg. Will he be able to revive Ronsard and bring a new wind to Ebenbourg?
Review
Wind of Ebenbourg, also called Ebenbourg no Kaze, is based on the PC hentai game by Studio e-go released in Japan on July 26, 2002. You might find it misspelled online as Edenbourg for example at http://www.archonia.com/, an anime retail company located in Belgium and at http://www.hkflix.com/. Studio e-go is famous for the PC titles Twin Way, Gakupara, Minute Work (or Men at Work), Natsu Kagura, and Castle Fantasia: Seima Taisen (a monster breeding game), the last was also available for the Dream Cast. Gamefaqs classified them as adventure games but they also fall under the role playing category and dating simulation. » The Pros
What first lured me to Wind of Ebenbourg was the character design. It reminded me of Kanon's artwork, the complexion of the girls, their hair and large eyes. As its name suggests, Wind of Ebenbourg is a romance with the air of a quaint, rural countryside. It takes place in 19th century Europe. Horse is still method of travel with a greater integration of railways and old-fashioned style cars for the rich.

» The Cons
There are two sex scenes per episode. In episode 2, it is sickening watching Eric handle Mylene so roughly. Mylene sucks on Eric's blood stained penis. Blood even drips onto the camera. He almost squeezes her breasts right off. I had to skip over it. There is also anal sex. I do not understand how she loves him. Eric treats her as an object, a toy to please him. Mylene, always obeying, all loyal. In episodes 1, does sex really get that watery? During the sex scenes, there is swaying of the camera - up and down and side to side, which can get dizzy. At some points, Claude has a ghost penis; this was employed in the PC game. As with all hentais and doujin, none of the women get pregnant.

Cathrine, the nun, is not present in the anime. Emma makes a guest cameo appearance. In the game, Claude is able to date Cathrine, Emma, and Rosalie. The graphics of the landscape are stunning. I liked the snow falling from the sky effect flying right towards you in the middle of episode 1. |

The hentai series should have included the opening theme from the video game entitled Viva Nova. There is a solely instrumental ending theme that sounds like a carnival. One problem with the subtitling is that not every line is subbed. The english dubbing is miserable. I couldn't stand it. The lines are so scripted and read out loud, like soulless NPCs in RPGs repeating a single phrase. Makes you wonder if any of the english voice actors took acting school, let alone study the Japanese dialogue beforehand. |

The DVD summary makes the mistake in saying that Mylene begins to have a deep relationship with Claude. In the game that might have been true, but in the anime this is absolutely false. She only has sex with Claude out of obligation to Eric; she moans his name in bed. Another reason for giving Claude her body is the social hierarchy between the master and servant. In the end, she follows Eric ship bound towards America, still considered the land of opportunity. I wish there were more episodes to Wind of Ebenbourg, like have Rosalie visit Claude in his mansion then do you know what. |

Originally the DVD was released in Japan in 2003; the American date was late February 2004. Because it is recent, the animation style is superb. The storyline is sound with the conflict between the previous duke Eric and Claude. The retail price of the two-episode set is $49.90 but you should be able to get it cheaper if you spend some time searching online. |
