Review
Onegai Twins (Please Twins, hmm sounds awkward) is the 12-episode sequel to Onegai Sensei that aired from July to October 2003. It was one of the most requested and downloaded series with a large fan following although anime reviewers have frequently shot it down. It is not really a true continuation or second season to Onegai Sensei like how Slayers and Slayers Next, Orphen and Orphen Revenge, or Ai Yori Aoshi and Ai Yori Aoshi Enishi are connected. Onegai Twins takes place two years after Onegai Sensei and features a brand new storyline and lead characters. I still recommend watching Onegai Sensei first due to the references to events that took place in Sensei and the returning characters and cameos.

» The Pros
Onegai Twins is a romance at its core just like Onegai Sensei. It is about the road you take in this present time. Will things work out for the three of them? We might be related...yet one of us must be a stranger because there were only two people in the photo. This is as close to the alien theme in Onegai Sensei as Twins comes. It's an ambiguous relationship. The girls want to make their relationship with Maiku clear, but when that happens one of them won't be able to stay in the house anymore. The one who is not a relative will have to leave one day. Thus, they are at a stand still, sort of a Catch-22. The other case was in episode 8. One desires to reach out and hold the girl of your dreams. But that can destroy the relationships you have. This situation leaves you stuck and indecisive. Can things really be left unchanged? How does one handle a future that is forever uncertain? A fact you can be rest assured with is that Kamishiro-kun is not the type of person to abandon someone.

» The Cons
Onegai Twins is a good series in its own right. The series lacks the same charm that Onegai Sensei had. I didn't find it as funny as Onegai Sensei, and the relationships were more serious. For one, the alien girlfriend theme is missing. Everyone seems to know about Marie at school and the relationship between Kei and Mizuho-sensei is no longer being kept as strongly a secret. Minoru-san is absent. The scriptwriters never explained why Miina dislikes the rain. She did spend parts of her childhood at the house along with Karen. The scenario is like Love Hina with the two girls and Kamishiro-kun living under one roof. The series in one long mystery keeping you guessing who is actually the blood relative, just like in Love Hina who is the promised girl. The brother sister family complex, how Miina and Karen end up falling for Maiku even though he might be their relative, is like Da Capo. Onegai Twins is on the same grounds as Mahoromatic in terms of ecchiness. Lastly, is it just me, or what are all these kids in Japan living alone? Can they do that?

Sadly Kei-kun only appears as brief cameos. He never says a word, well he did sneeze. There was a huge photograph of Kei kissing Mizuho at the end. Miina's character design, at least her hair, resembles Koishi from Onegai Sensei. The scenery and setting are like a walk through Onegai Sensei all over again. Miina, Karen, and Kamishiro-kun even visit the same hotel from the first series. Karen and Miina work at Koishi's family store while she studies for college exams. The bath scenes are reserved for the anime fan boy. Animation mixes a variety of styles from the film reel in the opening, to varying the window size, fading out to sequences revealing the personal thoughts of the characters, using cute-eyed puppy faces, and even mini-puppets in episode 7. What was missing was a festival episode with Maiku, Karen, and Miina dressed in kimonos like in the intro. Maybe exclusive to the manga only. |

Onegai Twins marks the return of Mizuho-sensei, Marie, and Ichigo as the senior class president. Ichigo is as sneaky as ever and still plays her role as matchmaker. Her status and power give her an edge in bossing the other characters around with threats of suspension or worse: her amazing thing, lol. It's as if she is taking charge of the Nadesico like Ruri. Quite the foil. Moving on to the new cast. Kamishiro Maiku played by Namikawa Daisuke is serious (Elk - Arc the Lad). Shimizu Ai voices Onodera Karen and is quiet like her other role in Mahoromatic as Minawa-chan. She apologizes frequently :p. I like the sound of uguu~ better than Karen's -myu. Her faints are not the same in degree as Kei-kun's blacking out, but they parallel nevertheless. Miyafuji Miina performed by Nakahara Mai was Rena from hack//Dusk. Like Onegai Sensei, Onegai Twins begins with a short dialogue that blends into the opening song, Second Flight. The opening gives a feeling of familiarity, as if you are returning to a place you once knew. |

The love continues in Onegai Twins. Twins questions the place of your true belonging. The Love Alliance idea and how Karen and Miina keep each other in check (that's a violation of rule # etc.) is cute. Episode 11 finally reveals who is the relative. The series ends gracefully. They even hinted Kamishiro-kun marrying Miina as a similar circumstance to Kei marrying Mizuho-sensei. |
