Synopsis
There was a light, warm and soft, and within that light was a girl. She introduced herself as Belldandy. I never questioned that mysterious encounter. That was because she was as natural as the wind. One week of summer that was as fulfilling as a year seemed as short as a day…
If I had known what it would lead to, I wouldn’t have made that promise. That’s why I said, ‘Erase my memory.’ That was how it began so long ago…
Review
Ah! My Goddess is a short segment of the manga of the same name. Keiichi Morisato is a freshman at Nekomi Tech and member of the college Auto Club. One day while dialing numbers at random for a restaurant he instead calls the Goddess Helpline service. Suddenly, out pops a woman from his mirror claiming to be able to grant him one wish. Thinking it was all a joke set up by his sempai’s, Keiichi wishes for her to become his girlfriend. To his surprise, that wish was granted.
The Breakdown
A fan favorite, only a taste of what the manga has to offer
» The Pros
The only single bit of action you'll find is one fireball thrown by Belldandy. Ah! My Goddess rather is a nice, mellow, heart felt anime series. You can't help but think how lucky Keiichi is, how happy he has become, all the days after he made that wish. With Urd, Skuld, and his sister Megumi, it really seems that they are one family. No matter what the trouble, you see Keiichi's determination to transform them all into fond memories.

» The Cons
Some people just flat out hate Belldandy. Hate should not be the termed used but instead one should look at her personality as entirely one-sided. Urd is mischievous and maintains that distrustful air around her even when she means to do well. Skuld at first puts all her blames on Keiichi but matures to accept Belldandy's true feelings towards him. However, Belldandy stays static throughout the anime. She is always the beautiful, kind-hearted goddess that you love and adore. She is the perfect girlfriend, excelling at cooking and not once raising her voice in criticism.

» Animation
8.0 |
Animation dates to 1993, archaic compared to today's vibrant sequences but not all that bad. The designs of the telephone, computer and printer, and television look outdated. Goes to show you how technology has changed since then. |

This is one of the rare animes that I first watched dubbed. The english voice actors were great although Urd was a bit overdramatic. However, in order to dub the voices I noticed that the beautiful musical scores in the original sub were edited out. Opening song My Heart gives the feeling that you are climbing up a staircase to heaven. Ending Congratulations is faster paced than the opening and is like a party celebration sung by the goddesses. |

» Story
8.0 |
In the first episode we are introduced to Belldandy. With her sudden appearance Keiichi must find a new place to live. Second episode, Belldandy's older sister Urd ruins their summer beach getaway. Next episode Skuld, Belldandy's little sister, throws a fit because she is lonely without Belldandy. Fourth and fifth is a two-part finale that I won't spoil for you. That sums it up right there. Short and sweet. Ideal for anime club meetings. If you notice during the opening there are frames of characters that do not appear in the anime but play prominent roles in the manga. So for the complete story you have to purchase the manga. Gomen, gomen. |

I don't see why they didn't put all the episodes on a single DVD instead of two. The extras used to fill up the rest of the DVD are not all that extravagant. The anime itself is a classic all fans must have for collections sake. |
