Sorcerer Hunters

» written by hinatasou [Discuss]

Synopsis
At the end of each episode are the following narration:

‘In the Spooner continent, sorcerers ruled over the people. The government exploited the people and the people, powerless, could do nothing but let their tears roll. But those people had a single source of hope. This was the existence of a secret group. People called them the Sorcerer Hunters.’

Review
Sorcerer Hunters (Bakuretsu Hunters) is the story of five heroes who under the orders of Big Mama (you heard correctly) are dispatched across the continent of Spooner to dispense of sorcerers using Kinju, a type of destructive magic that has long been prohibited. The leader of the group, supposedly, is Carrot Glasse, the ‘messenger of love’ who has the insatiable habit of womanizing. Although he is weak and cannot cast a single spell, he has just one special power, zoantropy: the ability to absorb magic to transform into a giant horned beast. He is joined by his brother, Marron, a serious and contemplative mage. Definitely the most insightful of the group. Third is Gato, the muscular blond with all the attack power. Last are the two sisters, red headed Chocolate and pink haired Tira, Carrot’s lovers who keep him in check often through force.

The Breakdown
Sorcerer Hunters doesn’t quite have what it takes to be an outstanding series. The episodes fail to really retain one’s attention. By the time it does, you are at the end of the series.

» The Pros
Underneath all the slapstick humor is a heart felt emotional side to the series. Tira, Chocolate, and Carrot have two faces, one in regular form and the other after they transform. Which represents the real self? The answer is both. I like the point that Tira made that people don't really know their true selves yet. You can't be your true self on your own. Only when you are with someone you like, then maybe for the first time you can be your true self, the self to show only to the one you've had in your heart. If you like someone, you'd be able to show any side of yourself.

» The Cons
The series jumps in fast from episode 1 right into one of the adventures of the five sorcerer hunters. Flashbacks are scattered throughout the series of their childhood. Sorcerer Hunters does suffer by the time you get through the first DVD. Seeing Carrot chase after a girl and get beaten up by Tira and Chocolate can only be done so many times before it gets boring.

Not overly impressive. The spinning white effect before each character in the opening is unique. Much more effort could have been concentrated into detail but wasn't, for example Big Mama's hair.

» Sound
9.0
The opening 'What's Up' is upbeat while the ending 'Mask' is technoish. The lyrics for the ending are appropriate for the series since Chocolate refers to Carrot as darling. It is as if Chocolate and Tira are performing a duet so that Carrot would surrender his heart to them. Background music although repetitive suits the actions from a scurrying to match Carrot lusting after another woman's affection to staging Tira and Chocolate's transformations. Let's not forget the queen of all anime japanese voice actors Megumi Hayashibara as Tira.

» Story
7.0
Episodes are incoherent with each successive installment. Episodes basically stand on their own and do not seem to be part of any overall storyline. For the most part, you can simply skip to episode 20 without suffering any major loss in the plot. The episodes on DVDs 1 through 3 follow either the expression of Carrot chasing after a girl or defeating a sorcerer. Sometimes they are combined, Carrot chasing after a beautiful female who is indeed an evil sorcerer. There are animes that are excellent up until the ending. Sorcerer Hunters is the first that I have encountered to be the exact opposite, fair until you get to the ending, which is absolutely exhilarating. The music even gets better in the last string of episodes that are connected to the confronting Zahatorte, the former leader of the Haz Knights, the man closest to god. You can think of Big Mama and Zahatorte corresponding to Professor X and Magneto, two people with different philosophies. Zahatorte believes that the world should repent and thus must first be destroyed. Big Mama could not sacrifice the lives of the innocent for an ideal world.

7 episodes on the first DVD. 4 DVDs total for the series. Reasonably priced. But the Slayers box sets are a better investment for a fantasy anime.
