‘The color of battle, the creaking wing is the sound of the beginning.’ Amidst the battered pavement of what was once the capital, there is a sanctuary, unscathed, that becomes the nucleus for the grand awakening. Sing, RahXephon, your song, your forbidden song in order for everything to become one someday.

Directed by Yutaka Izubuchi (Gasaraki) and produced by Bones, Mediafactory, Inc (Cowboy Bebop: Knocking on Heaven’s door) is the well-anticipated RahXephon. Its title is one letter short from Escaflowne and like it refers to a legendary mecha. Like Hitomi, Ayato travels to a world unlike from his own, not medieval in time but rather a parallel world outside of his own sphere known as Tokyo Jupiter. From here it deviates resembling Evangelion more. Ayato lends his services to the Earth Alliance’s counter-MU strategy research agency, known as TERRA, analogous to NERV. In order to protect the island of Nirai Kanai from enemy dolems, comparable to Eva’s Angels, Ayato pilots RahXephon. Characterwise, he himself is both older than his Eva counterpart Shinji and mature although he too shares in a mental quest for identity and overall place in life.

The Breakdown
Every fan of Evangelion and every dissatisfied fan that didn’t like Evangelion because of the ending should add RahXephon to their collection. Look forward to the movie, which will be in theaters, Japan this April.

» The Pros
Episode 19 really saddened me to heart with Ayato rescuing Asahina Hiroko from Tokyo Jupiter and trying to live a normal life with her. You can say fate was haunting Asahina's nature. It really is a paramount point to the entire series, emotionally.

» The Cons
The negative comments out there at message boards that this is a blatant rip off of the ever so omnipotent Evangelion.

» Animation
Stunning. An astonishment implementing all of the advancements of modern cel technology for an anime, not a movie. The scenery, the colors, the characters and their emotions all seemed choreographed like a dance.

» Sound
One of my favorite opening themes, hemisphere. Background violins and piano. The choir hymns or cries of the dolems play a vital role in the series for it is by which they derive power.

» Story
Much easier to follow than Evangelion. It is based in part on a series of books written by James Churchward who theorized that a continent and an advanced civilization existed called the Mu, similar to Atlantis. Ayato is part Murian and is able to live outside of Tokyo Jupiter due to his link to a dolem, RahXephon. The goal of the Mu, commanded by Ayato's own mother, is to reassert their rightful existence in the world as superior to mere humans in blood and in ability. Ayato, in the end, refer back to End of Evangelion, just like he as an artist paints new environments on canvas, recreates a new world to his liking with Quon, equivalent to Rei, serving as the catalyst.

» Recommend
$29.98 for five episodes. Good deal for a series that is Evangelion plus.
