Synopsis
When a mysterious energy field is found on the planet of Milocinia, a survey party is dispatched to investigate. Upon landing, Claude and the rest of the party discover a gigantic dome-shaped building. The interior of the dome appears to have been devastated by enormous explosions. All that remains inside are pieces of broken equipment and a mysterious device. While Ronixis, Claude’s father, and the rest of the survey team cautiously attempt to examine the object from afar, Claude becomes impatient and approaches the object. Suddenly, a powerful force takes hold of Claude. A blinding flash fills the room. When it subsides, Claude is nowhere to be found…

The Breakdown
A must see for anyone who played the game. The anime is just as if you had the controller in your hand playing the RPG, going from town to town recruiting people.
» The Pros
Star Ocean EX is a 26 episode series based on the Sony Playstation game Star Ocean: 2nd Story, arguably the best RPG for Playstation One. The video game has two stories, one from the point of view of Claude, the other from Rena. The anime choose to follow Claude\'s story, with Claude being the protagonist. The supporting characters are all taken from the game, but their character traits truly shine more in the anime.

» The Cons
Seems too coincidental. Claude saves Rena with his blaster and is mistaken for the legendary hero. When his blaster is damaged, he suddenly gains swordsmanship skills. Both Claude and Rena have their own destinies to fulfill. Claude is pathetic who personally doubts himself unable to live up to the reputation of his father. He is the weakest member of the team mentally and must rely on the support of his friends.

The opening 'To the Light' is inspiring with the beginning sort of mechanical and ending harpsichord, a good reflection of the series. The opening scenes are well adapted to the melody especially where the chains break to the refrain 'Go to the Light.' Both opening and ending themes are jpop. Mixed music from the video game. |

The title Star Ocean EX makes it seem as if this would be a space anime but it is more like Record of Lodoss War. Story is taken exactly from the video game but the battle scenes are more dramatized (Air Slash and Ray were not nearly that strong in the game as it is in the anime). Be warned of the ending. The anime only covers up to the first CD of the Playstation game, and the sequel Star Ocean EX 2 was canceled. |
